This paper discusses the paranormal aspects of Henry James' gothic novel. Are the ghosts real, are they representations of the "other selves" of characters. or are is there another explanation? This essay was written for Dr. Casja Baldini's 18th & 19th Century British Literature course. The paper focuses on whether James' novel can be considered as a member of the Gothic literary trope since the authenticity of the ghosts are questioned, as are the manner in which the romances play out.
